diesel fuel prices

August 4th, 2009

Diesel is the common name for the motor vehicle fuel used in compression ignition engines. It was named after the inventor of these engines, German engineer Rudolf Diesel, who patented his original design in 1892. Although diesel engines can burn a wide variety of fuels, diesel fuel from crude oils is still the most widely used today.

Historically, diesel fuel prices have been lower than the average price of gasoline. But, this is not always the case as during some winters, the demand for distillate heating oil goes up. And since September 2004, diesel fuel prices have been generally higher than the price of regular gasoline. The worldwide demand for diesel fuel and other distillate fuel oils has also been steadily increasing.
