caregiver resources

October 14th, 2009

A caregiver is an individual employed to render home care, meeting the physical and emotional needs of a client. The duties of a caregiver may vary. It can include providing personal hygiene care, serving and feeding, assisting the client as he moves around and providing therapy treatments as prescribed by a doctor. To do his duties efficiently, he is expected to maintain a standard of cleanliness and grooming. He needs to be in good physical health.

Where do you go if you need the services of a caregiver? You will have to look for caregiver resources. There will usually be several in your community but looking for the right one will be difficult. Before you go knocking on their door, make a list of the needs of the patient. These services may include:

~Scheduling appointments with physicians, physical therapists, and other specialists (don’t forget your appointments as well!)
~Transportation
~Financial management, paying bills, managing investments
~Housekeeping duties
~Personal hygiene, such as bathing or dressing
~Meal preparation
~Errands, including food shopping and picking up prescriptions
~Emotional support and companionship
~Recreation, such as taking a walks, or visiting a friend

A personal inspection of the facility is a must. Accessibility of the location is also important. Most important of all is determining if you can afford the services being offered.

August 11th, 2009

With the different inventions being made each year, high-tech equipments were created to make people with disabilities live easier and bearable each day. The simple wheelchair used by people for whom walking is difficult or impossible due to illness, injury or disability has different styles and variations. Nowadays, manual wheelchairs have evolved to electric-powered wheelchairs to standing wheelchair, sports wheelchairs, power chairs and many more. These power chairs have rear wheel drives, are extra light, have adjustable seat height, padded full function, armrest and removable fold up footrest. They also have full function adjustment that offers comfort and continual accessibility.

The earliest record found on wheelchairs date back to the 6th century. The first lightweight, steel, collapsible wheelchair was invented by Harry Jennings in 1933. He invented this for his disabled friend who had broken his back in a mining accident. Today, public transportation has provision for at least two wheelchairs in trains or buses. Buildings are also more accessible to wheelchair users.
