There are lots of walking canes available in stores. Most of them will be made of wood. In reality, though, there is actually no need for you to get one of these fancy wooden walking canes. A practical hiker can just cut off an appropriate branch from a tree, give it a little clean up and viola, he has a sturdy pole that will serve just as well as the store bought ones. It is important that the handle is carved out so that it will feel comfortable in the hands; it should be smooth enough to not cause a splinter.

How do you go about looking for the right branch that will make a good wooden walking stick? The first step is to look for the right kind of wood. Hardwoods such as cherry or oak will serve you longer than softwoods such as alder or fir. Inspect the branches and choose one that is the right diameter and length. One with a little curvature in one end will be ideal as it will have a readymade handle. Carefully cut the branch with a saw, remove the bark and cut off protruding pieces. After letting it dry, you can start enjoying yourself made wooden walking cane.
