Gymnastics is an interesting sport that requires good balance and concentration. It commonly uses a balance beam to perform various artistic gymnastic stunts. A balance beam is a long and narrow brace that is raised from the floor and stands at both ends. The standard length of a balance beam used in competitions is 16 ft. It is 10 cm wide and 1.25 m high.
In the past, balance beam was used by a lady gymnast more on dance than tumbling routines. It was used combining dance, leaps, rolls, walkovers and handstands. These can be performed with bare feet or with special beam shoes. Each routine takes about 70 to 90 seconds. The balance beam is used only by female gymnasts.
